So, it’s easy being a single mother is it?

Apparently Mylene Klass has said she loves being a single mum, she wants to ‘own’ it (whatever the hecky thump that phrase means) or #someothershit

Well, and please excuse the sarcasm here but it probably helps if you have millions in the bank, nannies or au pairs and not much else to have to worry about.

But for those of us who live in the real world the answer is slightly different.

No, it isn’t easy.

It’s bloody hard work!

I certainly didn’t set out to be a single mother, but ended up one pretty much from day 1. (And no, before anyone jumps in, I have never, ever denied any contact – just like to make that clear)

You don’t just have to be 1 parent, you have to be 2 rolled into 1.

The job is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, with no break.

No one to say “you know what, you have a lie in and I’ll take the baby out for a couple of hours!” – and believe me after 18months of being woken every 1½hours I looked like the living dead, followed by not actually sleeping through the night until he was 4, it’s no wonder I have bags under my eyes the size of a 747 cargo-hold!

No one to help you when they’re sick with a fever of 104, or having night terrors and you have no clue what to do.

No one to help out if you’re sick.

No one to talk to.

Now, I will admit I am luckier than a lot of lone parents out there, my parents took us in, and yes I don’t have to worry about rent or food. But I don’t and never have just sat back and taken advantage of their good nature – and I will never ever be able to repay them.

I don’t go out every night of the week, sleeping with any Tom, Dick or Harry.  In fact, it is very rare I go out at all – I go ballroom dancing once a week and that pretty much sums up the extent of my social life.

And yes, my so-called friends thought I had the life of Riley because I lived back with my parents. Why my parents do all the work for me and I can just swan about doing jack-all.

Actually that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I actually hold down so many jobs it’s unbelievable.

I’m obviously a full-time “most-epic-awesomest” mummy ever.

But I’m also, full-time housemaid, chef, laundry woman and most lately elderly carer.

And a business owner – which as you can see is not very far up the list due to all the other stuff that has to be done.

Then there’s the fact that I am still living with my parents and trying to bring up my child – can you see where this one’s heading? Yup! I say something to SC, they yell at me, for getting cross with him, and then in the next breath say I’m letting him rule the roost!!

And yes, I am extremely lucky that I do have my parents there if I am unable to do the school run because I need to be at work early, or can’t get home in time, or if I am unwell they are to help.

So, it’s not a doddle.  It certainly wasn’t a career choice and I wouldn’t say I ‘own’ it!

And yes, there are times, quite a lot if truth be told, where I wish there was handsome prince, just someone to talk to – about anything, someone to share the load with, someone to put their arm around me and say “don’t worry, I’m here for you, I’ll protect you!”

So, it is hard, very hard indeed, but it does have an extremely brilliant plus side.

SC and I have the most amazing relationship. The bond is unbreakable. And yes, I know, he’s only mine for a short time, but right now he is my entire world.

We are a team!

And I wouldn’t swap what we have, or have had, for anything.

Friday Poem – The Genius of the Crowd

An AMAZING poem by the American poet Charles Bukowski (1920 – 1994)crowds

What do you think?

The Genius of the Crowd

there is enough treachery, hatred violence absurdity in the average
human being to supply any given army on any given day

and the best at murder are those who preach against it
and the best at hate are those who preach love
and the best at war finally are those who preach peace

those who preach god, need god
those who preach peace do not have peace
those who preach peace do not have love

beware the preachers
beware the knowers
beware those who are always reading books
beware those who either detest poverty
or are proud of it
beware those quick to praise
for they need praise in return
beware those who are quick to censor
they are afraid of what they do not know
beware those who seek constant crowds for
they are nothing alone
beware the average man the average woman
beware their love, their love is average
seeks average

but there is genius in their hatred
there is enough genius in their hatred to kill you
to kill anybody
not wanting solitude
not understanding solitude
they will attempt to destroy anything
that differs from their own
not being able to create art
they will not understand art
they will consider their failure as creators
only as a failure of the world
not being able to love fully
they will believe your love incomplete
and then they will hate you
and their hatred will be perfect

like a shining diamond
like a knife
like a mountain
like a tiger
like hemlock

their finest art

Friday Poem – Desiderata

I stumbled across this poem in a shop the other day.magic

It was written by Max Ehrmann, an American writer, in 1927, but only became popular in the 1970s.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;  for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially, do not feign affection.

Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars;

You have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be careful.

Strive to be happy.

Desiderata – desired things – what do you desire?

The A-Z of Life – Gullibility

Gullible means easily tricked or manipulated.

Sometimes being gullible just means believing in something that we want to believe in because we feel it will make us happy.

It doesn’t mean we are stupid.

It doesn’t mean we should always believe that everyone is lying either.

No, we have to follow our hearts and believe what we feel is the truth.

I was gullible with Mr Wrong No. 2. I believed him when he said he wanted marriage and children. Having come from a relationship where I had been treated like the hired help, I wanted to believe that.

Truth was he just wanted a replacement for his ex-wife and child. I did not fit that mould – I have opinions 😉

But I have been much more careful with my heart since, and will only give it away to someone who proves themselves worthy and makes me believe in them.

What do I want?

A simple life.

No stress.

Happiness.

No worries.

Love.

No heartache.

Friendship, warmth, security, fulfillment, truth, honesty, peace, harmony …

… just like everyone else.

WYSIWYG

I always wondered what the acronym meant when I was younger, and my dad told me it stood for ‘what you see is what you get’.

Having feebly attempted to run my own businesses, this little acronym is of vital importance. There’s no point having a name, or a tagline that does not say what you do in a micro-second, because that’s all potential customers give you to make up their minds.

Effectively, you need to think of Ronseal’s tagline – “Does exactly what it says on the tin!”

I also think it’s important to be like this in life as well.

These days it’s all very much false this and false that – eyelashes, tan, hair, boobs, bums, I could go on, there’s stuff to suck you in, push you out and up. But all it does is create a false illusion – and what happens when all the falseness is stripped away?

I will admit to having false eyelashes in my make-up box – but I only ever use them on stage. I also have hair-pieces and wigs – but again the only time the big false hair-pieces or wigs get an outing is on stage. I sometimes wear the smaller ‘hair scrunchie’ pieces if I’m going out, am running out of time and my hair is not going to behave in a month of Sunday’s let alone 5 minutes!

I am very much a ‘what you see is what you get’ kinda gal.

I have no sides. I have no hidden agendas.

I don’t lie. I will tell the truth.

I am open about my feelings. This is why I get hurt.

I think way too much – more than is good for ‘a bear of very little brain’ 😉

I talk too much – most of it complete rubbish 😉

I am a complete whirlwind of chaos! Disorganised, scatty, and always on the go!

I do not relax and am always stressed about something.

I am a good listener to other people’s problems, but always bottle my own up – this does not help the stress levels!

I am always there for my friends and family – and will go out of my way to help anyone.

I am very child-like in many ways and this gets me into trouble because I will apply child-logic and just ask ‘why not?’

I dream.

I have dreams.

And I always have hope 😉
