Friday Poem – “Fairy-Land”

This poem written in 1829 by the American poet, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), was originally entitled “Heaven”, and was written whilst Poe was at the United States Military Academy starsat West Point.

One of the poem’s original publisher’s called it “exquisite nonsense”, whilst others have called it a prescursor to the “Walrus and the Carpenter” – “a portrait of fancy created with a feeling of beauty conveyed in fantastic words and delicate music”.

Is the poem really about fairy land, or maybe something more celestial??

Fairy-Land

Dim vales- and shadowy floods-
And cloudy-looking woods,
Whose forms we can’t discover
For the tears that drip all over!
Huge moons there wax and wane-
Again- again- again-
Every moment of the night-
Forever changing places-
And they put out the star-light
With the breath from their pale faces.
About twelve by the moon-dial,
One more filmy than the rest
(A kind which, upon trial,
They have found to be the best)
Comes down- still down- and down,
With its centre on the crown
Of a mountain’s eminence,
While its wide circumference
In easy drapery falls
Over hamlets, over halls,
Wherever they may be-
O’er the strange woods- o’er the sea-
Over spirits on the wing-
Over every drowsy thing-
And buries them up quite
In a labyrinth of light-
And then, how deep!- O, deep!
Is the passion of their sleep.
In the morning they arise,
And their moony covering
Is soaring in the skies,
With the tempests as they toss,
Like- almost anything-
Or a yellow Albatross.
They use that moon no more
For the same end as before-
Videlicet, a tent-
Which I think extravagant:
Its atomies, however,
Into a shower dissever,
Of which those butterflies
Of Earth, who seek the skies,
And so come down again,
(Never-contented things!)
Have brought a specimen
Upon their quivering wings

Friday Poem – Annabel Lee

A lovely poem written by Edgar Allen Poe a few months before his death. It is said he wrote it about his wife, Virginia Clemm, who married him at 13 and dies at 25.annabel lee

Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
   By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
   I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven
   Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
   My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
   Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

I’m Free

A beautiful poem, which I first heard about from my mother after she had attended a funeral of a dear friend. The author is unknown. It says so much, when words seem useless.PIC07233.JPG

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free.
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard him call.
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work, or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way,
I’ve found that peace at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow:
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full I’ve savoured much,
Good times, good friends, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, he set me free.

In loving memory of my lovely neighbour who sadly passed away this afternoon. She was the kindest, friendliest person I’ve ever met. May she be at peace now, free from all her suffering.

Blessed be.

Do you believe in angels?

I do.

I believe in fairies, magic, angels and guardian angels.

Whether this be a guardian angel or a spirit guide, or indeed whether these are one and the same, I believe we all have someone watching our backs, looking over us, and somehow guiding us along the path to our rightful destiny.

I like to think that when we shuffle off this mortal coil we do go to a better place, I just don’t get that at the end that’s it! I know our physical self will be worn out, but our souls are not a physical matter, what happens to them?

I believe in reincarnation, I believe our souls are reborn and continue their journey. And with every life we learn from mistakes made in past lives.

I also believe in soul-mates. And maybe we go searching through several lifetimes before we meet them. But I believe when 2 souls meet and its meant to be, you feel a deep connection without really knowing why and it’s like … magic!

I believe in magic! Not pulling rabbits out of hats type magic, but natural magic. Wonders of the earth and environment that you can’t explain. Magic in a good way 😉

I believe in fairies and fairy lore. I believe that like angels, fairies help guide us along the right path.

But most of all I believe in life 😉

I saw this quote the other day on a frame in a shop and thought it most beautiful:
