Friday Poem – In the Land of the Bumbley Boo!

This week’s poem is written by the wonderfully clever and funny Spike Milligan.

In the Land of the Bumbley Boo!

In the land of the Bumbley Boo
The People are red white and blue,
They never blow noses,
Or ever wear closes,
What a sensible thing to do!

In the land of the Bumbley Boo
You can buy Lemon pie at the zoo;
They give away foxes
In little Pink Boxes
And Bottles of Dandylion Stew.

In the land of the Bumbley Boo
You never see a Gnu,
But thousands of cats
Wearing trousers and hats
Made of Pumpkins and Pelican Glue!

Oh, the Bumbley Boo! the Bumbley Boo!
That’s the place for me and you!
So hurry! Let’s run!
The train leaves at one!
For the land of the Bumbley Boo!

The wonderful Bumbley Boo-Boo-Boo!
The Wonderful Bumbley BOO!!!

Macaroni & the Highway Code

Why is macaroni the only pasta that sticks to the bottom of the pan?

I can cook all manner of pastas without a problem, but macaroni…every time I cook it – irrespective of whether I stand over it and constantly stir it for the entirety of the cooking time, or just stir occasionally as per the instructions – it sticks to the bottom of the saucepan.

I just don’t get it!

Also, why do car drivers forget their Highway Code when it comes to parked cars along the road.

I was of the opinion that if you are driving along the road in one direction and there are cars parked on the opposite side of the road to you, then you have right of way over on-coming traffic.

Not so, where I live.

You get rude gestures, shouted at, barged out of the way and all manner of niceties if you try and obey the correct procedure.

I ended up feeling rather insecure about my opinion that I sought confirmation from a friendly policeman and was advised that I was correct after all.

So maybe it’s just the age we live in where people are in so much of a hurry, or are just plain rude, that they ignore all the rules of the road…

… or maybe it’s just where I live!

Friday Poem – Count that Day Lost

I stumbled across this lovely poem by Mary Anne Evans – better known as George Eliot who wrote Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner and Middlemarch amongst others.

Count that Day Lost

If you sit down at set of sun
And count the acts that you have done,
And, counting, find
One self-denying deed, one word
That eased the heart of him who heard,
One glance most kind
That fell like sunshine where it went —
Then you may count that day well spent.

But if, through all the livelong day,
You’ve cheered no heart, by yea or nay —
If, through it all
You’ve nothing done that you can trace
That brought the sunshine to one face–
No act most small
That helped some soul and nothing cost —
Then count that day as worse than lost.

When did you last do something childish?

Does being very grown-up, most of the time, mean we are no longer allowed to do impromptu things, that may to some seem a little childish, but give us back a moment of fun in our hum-drum lives?

Does it heck as like!  No, course it doesn’t 😉

Yesterday I was in the supermarket and trolley surfed down an aisle – you know push the trolley off and lift your feet off the ground – immense fun, and I never grow tired of doing it, even if I’m with SC 😉

OK. so I admit it, doing childish things sometimes, gives me a buzz, makes me happy and reminds me that I’m still alive, and no where near ready to stop having fun.

I also like sliding down handrails when no one is looking, rolling down hills (little ones), dancing around mime-singing into a hairbrush and yes, I have been known to skateboard down the aisle in the toy shop (clearly just showing SC how to do it, no pleasure in the experience at all 😉 )

So what was the last non grown-up thing you did?

Out of the Mouthes of Babes – In the beginning…

God created light with a big bang!bigbang

So there you have it – question solved.

SC reckons that when God created light it would have made a big bang, so creationists and scientists can both claim victory 😉

Friday Poem – My Creed

An inspirational set of words from Laine Parsons:lake wanaka

My Creed

To learn how to live for today.

To understand that I should accept the

things beyond my control, and not take

everything so seriously.

To hold on to courage and hope, and not let

doubt discourage me from doing anything

I aspire to do.

To remember that the world needs the

sunshine of as many smiles as it can get –

and to do my part.

To build bridges instead of walls.

To see the best in others; to acknowledge

their inner beauty with my outer appreciation.

To remember that without friends and loved

ones , my world would be nothing; to be

thankful that with them, it is everything.

To realise that there is an entire lifetime

ahead of me, but precious little time

to be wasted.

To work for my goals, and know that they

can be achieved; and to reach for dreams

with ability, determination and belief.

And finally to know, in the end, that

life will be good to me . . .

if I can do my best

to be good to life.
