Colonic Irrigation … Would You?

We’ve all seen the reality shows where ‘celebs’ go on a detox retreat and have to self-irrigate the colon by lying upside down on a wooden plank and pouring strong coffee into … well you get the general drift.

Colonic irrigation, or colon hydrotherapy ‘western-style’ is a more genteel affair.

Performed in sterile conditions, with machinery and warm water replacing wooden boards and coffee.

There are 2 sides the coin.

On one side, science has discredited the procedure as there is no evidence to suggest that colon cleansing, as practised by the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks, actually provides any health benefits, and in some cases is actually harmful, since the colon ‘is not dirty’ and naturally eliminates any waste product.

On the other side of the coin, is the belief, as held by the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks, that all the waste the we naturally expel from our colon (how polite is that?), causes a build up of mucus within the colon that stays after the waste has gone. It is this mucus build up, they say, that then increases toxin levels which enter our bloodstream, poisoning our bodies. Some people claim this mucus build-up causes symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain and low energy.

There is another ‘way out’ theory, that stress and past trauma help cause a build-of of waste that cakes to the wall of the colon and by eliminating this waste through colon cleansing, effectively rids you of all this past hurt – a bit like re-birthing!

For the record I have tried it!

Years ago, I went to a clinic and had it done. One of those things that was popular in ‘celeb-land’ at the time and I thought I’d give it a go.

Now, placebo effect, or whatever you want to call it, it may have been, but after the 1st treatment I actually felt as if I had more energy. I didn’t listen properly to the ‘after-care’ instructions though and didn’t drink enough, which resulted in a stinker of a headache for a couple of days, but like I said that was my fault, not a result of the treatment.

I did have done a couple more times, but the second time the woman doing it, was clearly a novice, as I mentioned that the speculum they … well I won’t go in to too much detail … needless to say I was proved right! I did go back again, but having been traumatised the second time, I couldn’t go through with it.

I don’t think I’d do it again, if I ever felt the need to rid myself of past hurts I think I’d rather just go into the countryside and have a good scream – its cheaper for one thing 😉

I think I put myself on the scientific side of the bench for this one and say that, for me, at least I saw no benefit. It was one of those crazy things you do, just because. I think with a good diet, less stress and exercise your colon will stay in pretty good shape.

Blog of the Year Nomination

The very lovely Daniella over at ‘Ding Dong it’s Mr Wrong‘ has very kindly nominated me for a Blog of the Year award. It is much appreciated – thank you, and thank everyone who takes the time to read my musings about the peculiarities of life.

There are 3 blogs I would like to nominate, and I thoroughly enjoy reading every one:

1.  Ding Dong it’s Mr Wrong – a wonderful blog to empower all of us that we deserve Mr (or Miss) Right, and to be treated with kindness. With some very witty insights on how to identify Mr Wrong traits.

2. Dear Ms Migraine –  a lovely lady, a wonderful campaigner to bring migraine awareness to the fore and a glimpse of living with migraine (and as a fellow migraine sufferer (stress related) I can totally empathise). A migraine is not just a bad headache that requires a couple of aspirin, it is a very debilitating condition, with real, physical symptoms that can render sufferers incapable of literally doing anything for days.

3. In My Opinion – a beautiful blog by the lovely Diane Owens. She has set herself the unenviable task of answering one question every day for a year. The questions she has asked are extremely varied, but extremely readable and some definitely get you thinking.

The ‘rules’ for this award are simple:

1.Select another blog or other blogs who deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award

2.Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award

3.Include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award at the Thought Palette and provide these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)

4.Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them

5.You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience

6.As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

When you begin you will receive the 1 star award, and every time you are given the award by another blog, you can add another star! So until now I have only 1 star!!

There are total of 6 stars to collect.

You can check out your favourite blogs, and even if they have already been given the award by someone else, you can still award them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

For more information check FAQ on The Thought Palette.
